05/05/2016 - Daniela Diz, Elisa Morgera and Meriwether Wilson, MARINE BENEFITS - Research on the valuation of ecosystem services has been a growing field over the last decade as a result of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, but with more limited application in the marine realm. This blog post starts by providing some background on the emergence of the ecosystem services discourse and its uptake in international biodiversity processes, and an overview of shortcomings in ecosystem services research, with a special focus on marine ecosystems. As the second post in a series discussing fair and equitable benefit-sharing in the context of the ecosystem approach to fisheries management under the Marine Benefits project, the post concludes with some questions for further exploration.
